An uneven playing field: protecting our water and farmland from inappropriate mining

The agricultural productivity of the Darling Downs is the economic and social lifeblood of our community, producing food and fibre for Australia and the world, and supporting thousands of jobs.
Despite this, our highly productive Darling Downs farms are under threat from coal seam gas mining, and farmers are having to battle a myriad of complicated legislation, up against well-resourced multinational corporations to protect our land, water and livelihoods.
Please join Save our Darling Downs, Environmental Defenders Office, Lock the Gate, Queensland Conservation Council and the Darling Downs Environment Council for an important event about the role of the community in protecting land and water at 6pm Wed, 25th June at the Irish Club Hotel.
What: An uneven playing field: protecting our water and farmland from inappropriate mining
When: 6pm, Wednesday 25th June
Where: The Irish Club Hotel, 80 Russell St, Toowoomba City QLD 4350
There will be snacks provided and the bar will be open for anyone wanting to purchase drinks
Nealy eight months ago, the incoming LNP government promised better protections for priority agricultural areas across the Downs, including for the Condamine Alluvium. That promise as yet remains unfulfilled, and now, there are worrying signs that landholder and community objection rights could be weakened. Such signs include the scrapping of the Queensland Law Reform Commission’s 2-year Mining Lease Objections Review so close to its completion; the removal of ongoing funding of the EDO, relied upon by so many farmers and regional communities; and the recent announcement by the Department of Environment, Tourism, Science and Innovation (DETSI) of their intentions to streamline the environmental assessment process.
As we know, the legislation is already tipped heavily in the favour of resource mining in Qld. Any weakening of community objection rights, alongside transparency and accountability provisions, would come at a cost to agricultural production, our natural environment and shared water resources.
Please join us to learn about your rights, what’s at stake, and what you can do to ensure your objection rights are upheld.
This event is particularly important for farmers, landholders, environmental advocates, and community members who are concerned about how resource projects – particularly CSG mining – are approved and whether their rights to object are being protected. It will also be valuable for anyone interested in understanding how local voices can shape the future of land and water management in their region.
