SUMMARY:An uneven playing field: protecting our water and farmland from inappropriate mining
DESCRIPTION:The agricultural productivity of the Darling Downs is the economic and social lifeblood of our community\, producing food and fibre for Australia and the world\, and supporting thousands of jobs.  \nDespite this\, our highly productive Darling Downs farms are under threat from coal seam gas mining\, and farmers are having to battle a myriad of complicated legislation\, up against well-resourced multinational corporations to protect our land\, water and livelihoods. \nPlease join Save our Darling Downs\, Environmental Defenders Office\, Lock the Gate\, Queensland Conservation Council and the Darling Downs Environment Council for an important event about the role of the community in protecting land and water at 6pm Wed\, 25th June at the Irish Club Hotel.  \nWhat: An uneven playing field: protecting our water and farmland from inappropriate mining \nWhen: 6pm\, Wednesday 25th June \nWhere: The Irish Club Hotel\, 80 Russell St\, Toowoomba City QLD 4350 \nThere will be snacks provided and the bar will be open for anyone wanting to purchase drinks \nNealy eight months ago\, the incoming LNP government promised better protections for priority agricultural areas across the Downs\, including for the Condamine Alluvium. That promise as yet remains unfulfilled\, and now\, there are worrying signs that landholder and community objection rights could be weakened.  Such signs include the scrapping of the Queensland Law Reform Commission’s 2-year Mining Lease Objections Review so close to its completion; the removal of ongoing funding of the EDO\, relied upon by so many farmers and regional communities; and the recent announcement by the Department of Environment\, Tourism\, Science and Innovation (DETSI) of their intentions to streamline the environmental assessment process. \nAs we know\, the legislation is already tipped heavily in the favour of resource mining in Qld.  Any weakening of community objection rights\, alongside transparency and accountability provisions\, would come at a cost to agricultural production\, our natural environment and shared water resources.   \nPlease join us to learn about your rights\, what’s at stake\, and what you can do to ensure your objection rights are upheld. \nThis event is particularly important for farmers\, landholders\, environmental advocates\, and community members who are concerned about how resource projects – particularly CSG mining – are approved and whether their rights to object are being protected. It will also be valuable for anyone interested in understanding how local voices can shape the future of land and water management in their region. \nPlease RSVP at the following link. \nLiza Balmain & Nick Holliday \nPh: 0428 785767        Ph: 0427 711 020        \nhttps://www.saveourdarlingdowns.org.au/ \nRelated Images:

SUMMARY:Mining lease objections review - Information session
DESCRIPTION:The Queensland Law Reform Commission is holding a forum on Wednesday 20 November from 11.30am – 12.30pm at BMO in Dalby. \nInterested community members are invited to attend either in person or online. \nQLRC has been tasked with reviewing and making recommendations on the processes for deciding contested mining leases and associated environmental authority applications. The review is set to run for two years\, with their final report and recommendations due to be provided to the Government by 30 June 2025. They have released 2 consultation papers\, Reimagining decision-making processes for Queensland mining and Valuing the perspectives of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islander peoples\, which present proposals to reform the process for mining leases and associated environmental authorities. \nQLRC is also now starting the second stage of its review\, which is to consider whether any changes they recommend to the mining lease processes should also apply to applications for resource production tenures (and their associated environmental authorities) under the following Acts: \n\nPetroleum and Gas (Production and Safety) Act 2004\nGreenhouse Gas Storage Act 2009\nGeothermal Energy Act 2010.\n\nIt will release a separate consultation paper about these other resource production tenures in mid-November 2024. To coincide with the release of this paper it is planning to visit regional areas to consult with stakeholders who are involved with and affected by petroleum and gas projects. \nThere is no need to RSVP for in-person attendance. However\, if you are wishing to attend virtually\, please register by using the QR code in the attached invitation or by accessing this link: Microsoft Virtual Events Powered by Teams. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDear Colleague\, \nAs part of our mining lease objections review\, we are considering whether any recommendations we make for mining should apply to other resource production proposals. This includes petroleum leases and their associated environmental authorities. \nThe focus of our review is on community participation. \nWe want to hear your views. \nFleur Kingham\, Commission Chair\, will be in Dalby to hear from community members. We welcome you to join us in person\, or online.  \nMining lease objections review – Information Session\nHosted by QLRC Chair\, Fleur Kingham\nWednesday 20 November 2024\n11.30pm – 12.30pm  \nFollowed by a light lunch and refreshments \nBMO Business Centre\n178 Drayton St\, Dalby \nThis session can also be attended online – please register to receive an MS Teams link. \n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\nRelated Images:

SUMMARY:Fire in the Landscape - perspectives
DESCRIPTION:The Royal Society of Queensland and the Royal Geographical Society of Queensland have organised a public forum on the fire management in the Australian landscape with a panel of knowledgeable speakers to present some critical perspectives on the management of fire in the landscape. The forum has been planned to stimulate discussion between rural landholders and conservationists about fire regimes that can conserve habitat as well as producing food and fibre for a growing population. Click on theb image above for a flyer. \nRecent global warming and residential settlement in fire-prone areas pose new challenges. \nThe forum will discuss: \n\nIs the knowledge of the past appropriate for the future?\nWhat do we know\, what do we need to know\, and what science do we need to develop appropriate landscape policy?”\nHow do we balance the values and needs of different stakeholders in managing fire in today’s landscape?\n\nDATE Friday 20 September\, 2024\nTIME 1-5pm Please arrive by 12.30 for registration\nVENUE Gregory Place\, RGSQ Level 1 /28 Fortescue St\, Spring Hill \nZoom hook-up is also available.
