Restoring wetlands for the future of our planet

For as long as people have lived on the earth, we have relied on wetlands for our survival. They are among the most important parts of our planet — critically important ecosystems that contribute to biodiversity and climate mitigation, provide us with fresh water, and which are integral to both our economy and our well-being.

Understanding humanity’s relationship to wetlands is essential to protecting them from a range of threats. In the past 300 years, nearly 90% of the world’s wetlands have been degraded. Internationally, we are losing wetlands three times faster than forests.

This World Wetlands Day, come and hear a range of experts talk about Queensland’s hundreds of thousands of wetlands, the importance of wetlands to Traditional Owners and their long custodianship of Country, what ecologists want us to know about the many important functions wetlands perform, and why protecting and restoring our wetlands is vital for humanity and the future of our planet.
